Red Maple Acer rubrum The Red Maple is sometimes referred to as scarlet maple, swamp maple, soft maple, Carolina red maple, Drummond red maple and water maple. Red Maple is an excellent ornamental variety in a large garden and ranks high as a shade tree for landscapes. Its red colors are evident throughout the year with ruby-red flowers and scarlet winged seeds in late winter, red leaf stalks in summer and fall is blessed with a sea of red, yellow and orange foliage. One of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America, it can probably thrive on a wider range of soil types, textures, moisture, pH, and elevation than any other forest species in North America. A fast-growing and long lived variety, Red Maple may live to over 100 years and grow to 60 feet in height at maturity.
